Early menopause tied to higher breast and ovarian cancer risk

The data suggest that common risk factors for primary ovarian insufficiency and reproductive or hormonally influenced cancers, researchers say.

Women with early menopause have a two times greater risk for breast cancer and a nearly four times higher risk for ovarian cancer, according to a US study presented at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.

Dr Kristina L Allen-Brady (PhD), from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and colleagues identified 613 women with primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) aged 40 and younger, and 165 women with early menopause aged >40 but below 45.
