Last year, Australian Doctor published the story of Dr Kenny Clark, a GP with type 1 diabetes who built his own artificial pancreas by following instructions on social media.

However, he isn’t the only patient doing this. There is an online community with its own hashtag: #WeAreNotWaiting.

Trials are underway of professionally manufactured devices that automatically adjust insulin delivery based on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

But people like Dr Clark aren’t waiting — hence the hashtag — and are making their own ‘looping’ devices by hacking older insulin pumps to link to a CGM device.
