Thirteen years ago, when I was a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed GP registrar, I saw for the first time a patient who declared at the start of their appointment: “I’m trans and I want medical treatment for gender transition.”

Back then it was a relatively uncommon presenting complaint, and that young person had in fact already been seen and assessed at an interstate gender clinic.
