‘We thought it was a stick’: Doctor’s miracle rescue of man floating 5km out at sea

By chance, Dr Glen Valaire spotted the man, who had gone overboard from a cargo ship and spent 18 hours in the open ocean.

Dr Glen Valaire was returning from an open-water fishing trip with a close friend when five kilometres from shore, in a vast expanse of nothingness, they spotted something bobbing in the ocean.

“We thought it was a stick,” he tells 6minutes.

But as they got closer they discovered it was a man, dehydrated, hypothermic, exhausted and close to death.

It turned out he had been in the water for 18 hours having gone overboard from a cargo carrier called the Double Delight off the north NSW coast the day before.
