‘We need to see the evidence’: Alarm after COVID-19 isolation mandate cut to five days

There are growing calls for National Cabinet to release of the health advice underpinning its decision to cut COVID-19 isolation periods from seven to five days, with some doctors warning of an escalation in transmission.
The reduced mandate will applies to people who no longer have symptoms following a positive test – although GPs and other staff working in aged care will still have to isolate for seven days.
The AMA is alarmed by the shift, saying that up to 30% of positive cases were still likely to be infectious on days six and seven.
“Throughout this pandemic the AMA has continuously said governments must base their decision-making on the health and medical advice,” its president, Professor Steve Robson, said.
