Medical Board of Australia chair Dr Anne Tonkin has thanked the doctors who have come forward with information on shonky cosmetic surgery operators, saying they’ve “helped clean up” the industry.

New AHPRA figures show nearly 30 cosmetic surgeons have been sanctioned since Dr Tonkin wrote to every doctor in Australia urging them to report cosmetic doctors they believed were providing poor care, following the release of a damning review into the industry.

“Thanks to the dozens of doctors who have shared information that has helped us clean up the cosmetic surgery industry and make it safer for patients,” Dr Tonkin said in a statement today to 6minutes.

“Direct information from doctors who are seeing what’s going on in the industry is invaluable.”
