‘The government has the data … they should just publish it’: New call to name and shame specialists over fees

Private health insurers are calling for specialist doctors who allegedly price gouge patients to be “named and shamed” by the Federal Government.

Fees were under the spotlight again last week following a new report by former ACCC commissioner Professor Allan Fels into the commercial activities of supermarkets, banks and airlines.

In one chapter, he examined the charges of non-GP specialists suggesting in many cases charges were double the schedule fee with “no evidence that they provide a better service”.

But responding to the report on Wednesday, Private Healthcare Australia called for the government to intervene.
