‘Sleeping is not in your job description’: Night-shift doctors ordered to stop napping

Manning Hospital has backed down over its email requiring staff to stay awake.

Hospital bosses have apologised after ordering doctors-in-training to stop napping on night shifts.

Executives from Manning Hospital in Taree, NSW sent a stern email last Wednesday informing doctors that they should be helping out in the ED or in other wards should they find themselves with no further duties overnight.

As part of the response, it said that “dirty linen” had been removed from a quiet room to prevent any future sleeping, with security tasked with monitoring any further abuse.

“It has been brought to our attention by security that this room is being used at night for sleeping,” the directive said.
