The Medical Board of Australia has revealed plans for an expedited specialist pathway for IMGs from certain countries that would cut specialist colleges out of the assessment process.

It wants this fast-tracked pathway open for GPs by October, followed by anaesthetists, psychiatrists, and obstetricians and gynaecologists by December.

The idea of an expedited pathway had been floated in a government review last year, called the Kruk review.

But the RACGP says it had no inkling that the board would make an announcement last week.
