A leading endocrinologist has been the victim of a bizarre deepfake scam, with a news item fabricated by AI showing him describing doctors who prescribe metformin as “idiots”.
Posted on Facebook, it also shows Professor Jonathan Shaw, deputy director of the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, declaring that the drug’s side effects could “harm your body even more than the diabetes itself”.
