Doctors have achieved what they say is a medical first, by performing a kidney transplant on a patient who was awake during the procedure.
Surgeons at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago say they gave their patient John Nicholas, a spinal epidural, a nerve block, and light sedation to perform the two hour surgery.
