Half of GPs ‘not told’ when paediatric patients rehospitalised for asthma

Children need more consistent GP visits and communication between hospitals and primary care to prevent readmission, researchers say.

One in three kids with asthma are readmitted to hospital with exacerbations within a year of their first presentation, yet fewer than half of GPs are aware of the rehospitalisation, say Melbourne researchers.

The team from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute also found that 53% of GPs with such patients said they were unable to contact the family for a follow-up appointment “due to being unaware the child was admitted”.
