GP registrar pay crunch: 31% are taking second jobs

One registrar said she had resorted to working shifts at an after-hours deputising service to help pay off her mortgage

Almost one third of GP registrars are moonlighting in second jobs to supplement their incomes, new figures suggest.

The General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) says the results of its annual benchmarking report highlight the need for better pay and conditions, particularly for registrars in their first term of training.

Its survey of 395 doctors working towards RACGP or ACRRM fellowship found 31% had taken on some additional work on top of full-time roles in general practice, with most reporting the motivation was extra money.

The majority were in their first term of GP training, which currently has a base annual salary of $76,533.
