The Queensland Government has started slugging GP practices with retrospective payroll tax bills, including a demand for one practice owner to pay $3 million, the AMA says.

The fresh demands following similar moves against practices in NSW and Victoria in recent years, triggered fears that practices will be forced out of business.

AMA Queensland president Dr Maria Boulton said the state government was using the interstate legal precedents to launch its “blatant cash grab”.

She pointed to the case of Brisbane GP Dr Aaron Chambers, who owns three mixed-billing practices with 25 GPs.
