Hospitals roll out software that tracks vital signs and ward notes to predict when patients will be discharged

The two doctors who created The Adelaide Score say there's a reason the AI's conclusions are not shared with treating doctors.

Hospitals are rolling out doctor-made AI software that uses vital signs, ward notes and lab results to rank from 0-100 the likeliness that patients are ready for discharge within 24 hours.

After a pilot at SA’s Lyell McEwin Hospital, ‘The Adelaide Score’ has been extended to Modbury Hospital, while its two doctor-creators are in talks with the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre.

Dr Stephen Bacchi and Dr Joshua Kovoor started programming in medical school, though the Adelaide Score emerged from their PhD research.

An unusual feature is that the AI’s conclusions are deliberately not flagged with doctors, to avoid biasing clinical decisions.
