Risk of death from the novel coronavirus rises rapidly with age, and, overall, it’s more deadly than the 2009 H1N1 flu, according to a new report in the Lancet Infectious Diseases.

The findings come from a model that uses data from China, where the pandemic started, and 37 other nations to estimate mortality.

The case-fatality ratio in China was 1.38%, the researchers found, after adjusting for demographics and case underascertainment.

However, among those aged 60 and older, it was 6.4%, and rose to as high as 13.4% for those 80 and older.
