A British company’s plan to sell genetically modified mosquitoes to curb dengue fever in Australia has come under fire from a local expert.

With funding from the CSIRO, UK biotechnology firm Oxitec had approached the Federal Government’s Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) seeking permission to sell genetically modified mosquitoes to companies and individuals in Queensland.
