Australian Doctor reveals the pharmacist training to diagnose and treat UTIs

A three-hour online module and 20 multiple-choice questions is the pathway for pharmacists to offer $20 consults
Professor Mark Morgan.

Pharmacists will undergo just three hours of training and complete a 20-question multiple-choice exam before prescribing antibiotics for uncomplicated UTIs under the controversial Queensland trial launched a fortnight ago.

Hundreds of pharmacists can now charge $20 a consult before prescribing and dispensing trimethoprim, nitrofurantoin or cefalexin to non-pregnant women aged 18-65 for uncomplicated cystitis.

It has been dubbed a danger to patients by both the RACGP and the AMA due to the potential for misdiagnosis and the affect on antimicrobial resistance.

Details of the training involved have remained a mystery, with the Queensland branch of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia refusing to make them public.
