Around 1% of all deaths in Australia a result of voluntary assisted dying, new report says
Almost 2500 terminally ill Australians have chosen to end their lives using voluntary assisted dying in the five years since the scheme’s introduction, a report shows.
And 959 doctors have undertaken voluntary assisted dying (VAD) training, with almost two-thirds of those going on to care for assisted dying applicants, according to the State of VAD report, released by Go Gentle Australia on Monday.
The report provides the first national picture of the impact of the assisted dying laws, after Victoria became the first state to make VAD available in June 2019.
It is now legal in every jurisdiction except the NT, although VAD laws in the ACT do not come into effect until November 2025.
