AMA calls for aged care rebate overhaul
The rebates for GPs to visit nursing homes need to rise by at least $28 to compensate for time spent finding parking and dealing with red tape, the AMA says.
AMA president Dr Tony Bartone has described the day-to-day ordeal of visiting an aged care facility, which can often result in GPs wasting an hour before seeing their first patient.
Each subsequent patient seen would then require a total of 44 minutes of a GP’s time on average, 30 minutes of which was completely unpaid, he said.
That could include time spent finding patients or staff members, filling out paperwork or discussing treatment plans with aged care staff.
