3 in 4 babies present to a GP with infection in first year

Three quarters of babies see a GP because of an infection at least once in their first year of life, a Victorian study shows.
And one in 10 presents to an ED with an infection, according to the research led by Melbourne’s Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI).
Factors associated with infections included maternal antibiotic exposure in pregnancy, having older siblings, attending childcare, and reduced rates of breastfeeding, according to the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health study.
“Infant infections place significant burden on primary healthcare,” the researchers wrote.
