'Growing up in the hospital system' has given the aspiring rural generalist a unique perspective on medicine.
“The doctor didn’t come to speak to me afterwards. They didn’t tell Mum and Dad that the surgery hadn’t worked.
“They didn’t visit me in the ICU or on the ward. I never had a follow-up appointment.
“I never saw that doctor again. Whether it was guilt, fear or they were just busy; I don’t know.”
Dr Caitlin Rutherford-Heard is talking about just one of the 24 surgeries she underwent by the time she was 24.
